Guangzhou Announces New Restrictions on Electric Vehicles in Public Spaces

Guangzhou will implement a new regulation on January 1, 2024, aimed at enhancing public safety and improving traffic flow in designated public areas. This regulation will prohibit the use of various motor and non-motor vehicles, including electric bicycles, regular bicycles, electric unicycles, and electric scooters, in the following locations:

  • Parks
  • Squares
  • Pedestrian streets

This restriction applies to all hours of the day, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for pedestrians in these spaces.

The regulation further extends its reach to motor vehicles in specific areas of the city. Within the central urban areas of each district, motor vehicles will be prohibited from entering the following public places 24 hours a day:

  • Banks of rivers
  • Lakes
  • Reservoirs

Violators of these regulations will face consequences, including:

  • First offense: Warning
  • Second offense: Fine of 50 RMB to 200 RMB
  • Third or more offenses within a year: Inclusion in the public credit information management system

This new regulation marks the first of its kind in China, demonstrating Guangzhou’s commitment to innovative solutions for managing motor and non-motor vehicle usage in public spaces. It aims to create a safer, more organized, and pedestrian-friendly urban environment for all.
