Following its successful international debut in Singapore last year, the Shenzhen dance drama “Wing Chun” is gearing up for its second overseas tour, this time in the United Kingdom. The production will grace the stage of London’s renowned Sadler’s Wells Theatre for a series of 12 performances from Friday until September 7.
This critically acclaimed production, which has already captivated audiences in Singapore, is set to make a significant impact in the UK. The Sadler’s Wells Theatre, located on Rosebery Avenue, is one of the UK’s foremost dance venues, with a rich history of over three centuries in the performing arts. The venue features a 1,500-seat main auditorium and the more intimate Lilian Baylis Studio, along with extensive rehearsal rooms and technical facilities.
Preparations are well underway as the “Wing Chun” team, comprising cast and crew from the Shenzhen Opera & Dance Theater, finalizes their rehearsals. The team has been working tirelessly to ensure a flawless presentation on the British stage. Deputy Director Li Chenzhe of the theater’s dance troupe mentioned that while the stage and props have been adjusted by about 20% to fit the venue’s layout, the cast size remains the same, ensuring a powerful and authentic performance.
In London, excitement is building as “Wing Chun” promotions have taken over prominent locations, including subway stations and Westfield Square, where vibrant posters and outdoor screens showcase the upcoming performances. This tour marks a significant milestone, bringing the total number of “Wing Chun” shows performed overseas to 202.
Chief dancer Chang Hongji emphasized the importance of this international tour, stating, “Each performance is an opportunity for us to progress. We aim to fully exhibit our dance language and cultural understanding, allowing our international audience to appreciate our art.”
“Wing Chun” first premiered at the Shenzhen Poly Theater on December 22, 2022, to a full house. Since then, the production has toured extensively both domestically and internationally, earning its place in the global performing arts market and mesmerizing audiences with its blend of artistry and cultural depth.
