Shangwei, a 400-year-old Hakka village in Shenzhen’s Longhua District, has undergone a remarkable transformation into a cultural hub. This revitalization initiative, launched in 2017, has encouraged artists to settle in and breathe new life into the ancient community. The village boasts a rich heritage, featuring four 500-year-old watchtowers and nearly 50 traditional Hakka dwellings. Today, it is home to a vibrant community of nearly 100 artists and houses studios, museums, exhibition halls, and other cultural spaces.
Painter Tang Wenbiao, one of the village’s resident artists, draws inspiration from Guangdong’s intangible cultural heritage. His latest oil painting pays homage to the kylin dance, a traditional art form that embodies the region’s cultural spirit. Visitors to Shangwei can often find Tang sharing the stories and techniques behind his work at his studio.
This unique blend of history and creativity has turned Shangwei into a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts, history buffs, and cultural explorers alike. The village stands as a testament to how ancient traditions and modern artistry can coexist, offering a renewed sense of identity and purpose to historical landmarks.
