Avid fans of Chinese kung fu will be thrilled to learn that the Shenzhen-produced groundbreaking dance drama “Wing Chun” is set to tour the U.K., France, and Russia from August to October.
Presented by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre, this highly acclaimed dance drama will be staged at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London from August 30 to September 7 and at Palais des Congrès de Paris in Paris from October 4 to 6.
“Wing Chun” tells a parallel story of Bruce Lee’s mentor and Wing Chun master Yip Man instructing his disciples in the mid-20th century, while decades later, a film crew tries to shoot a movie about Yip and pursues their dreams. Spanning two eras, the dance drama not only showcases Yip’s profound influence on the traditional martial art of Wing Chun but also pays respect to ordinary individuals in pursuit of their aspirations.
Imbued with Eastern aesthetics, “Wing Chun” embraces a symphony of martial arts styles including Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Baguazhang, Baji Fist, and Mantis Fist, harmoniously blending combat prowess with the grace of dance to deliver a visual spectacle of unparalleled beauty.
Directed by established Chinese choreographers Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, “Wing Chun” brings together champions from major Chinese dance competitions, integrating martial arts with traditional dance and embodying the essence of Chinese philosophy — the delicate balance between strength and fluidity.
Adorned in exquisite gambiered Canton gauze, symbolizing the epitome of Chinese silk craftsmanship, the dancers are set against a Lingnan arcade-style stage. Through a palette of colors and evocative lighting reminiscent of cinematic brilliance, “Wing Chun” creates a realm suffused with Oriental aesthetics, resonating with profound philosophical and Zen expressions.
Don’t miss the chance to appreciate the mesmerizing artistry of “Wing Chun” live in theaters — a spectacle that will leave you in awe and inspired.
