Summer camp for international students begins in SZ

Shenzhen Summer Camp Kicks Off at SZU

Excitement surged as the 2024 International Youth Study in Shenzhen & Shenzhen University (SZU) “Shenzhen Summer Camp” officially launched yesterday during a ceremony held at SZU’s Yuehai campus in Nanshan District. Running until August 23, the camp has attracted 40 international youth from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Kazakhstan.

Diverse International Participation

The Shenzhen Summer Camp offers a unique opportunity for these international students to deepen their understanding of the Chinese language and culture while experiencing the remarkable development of Shenzhen. Some participants are from SZU’s Tokyo College, the university’s first overseas campus, adding an extra layer of international diversity to the event.

Cultural and Academic Exploration

During the ceremony, Zhang Xiaohong, vice president of SZU, warmly welcomed the international students on behalf of the university. She expressed her hopes that students would not only successfully learn Chinese and deepen their knowledge of Chinese culture but also build friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds during their time in Shenzhen. The camp’s activities include Chinese language courses, visits to SZU’s two campuses, and engaging in cultural workshops like papercutting and Chinese tea.

Testimonials from Participants

Participants have already begun to express their enthusiasm. Raffi O’Callaghan from the United Kingdom believes this opportunity will significantly improve her Chinese language skills and provide deeper insight into China’s traditions, cuisine, and daily life. Meanwhile, Elisabeth Guarneri from Italy, who has cherished Chinese culture since she was 10 years old, is eager to learn more about Shenzhen’s technology sector.

A Glimpse into Shenzhen’s Tech Sector

The Shenzhen Summer Camp also offers a chance for participants to explore the city’s booming technology industry. Students will visit renowned companies like Tencent and BYD, giving them a firsthand look at the innovations driving Shenzhen’s growth. This exposure to China’s tech sector aligns with the academic and cultural objectives of the camp, providing a well-rounded experience for all attendees.

Guarneri, visiting Shenzhen for the first time, is already captivated by the city. She shared, “I told my parents yesterday that I would love to stay here for a year or a little longer to really get to know more about China and its people.”

The Shenzhen Summer Camp promises to be a memorable and enriching experience, blending academic learning with cultural immersion in one of China’s most dynamic cities.
