China is set to integrate emerging digital technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence into the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry over the next three to five years. This Digital TCM Integration initiative, therefore, aims to enhance the inheritance and innovation of TCM. By promoting the sharing, circulation, and reuse of TCM data, the initiative will ultimately build a “Digital and Intelligent TCM.”
To begin with, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Data Administration have jointly issued guidelines. These guidelines outline 20 specific measures that will promote the development of digital TCM integration. Specifically, they focus on consolidating the foundation of digital TCM by establishing unified data standards, strengthening data security, and cultivating TCM professionals with digital skills.
Foundation of Digital TCM Integration
First and foremost, the guidelines emphasize the importance of digitalization in enabling the high-quality development of TCM. For instance, one of the key measures includes the development of intelligent electronic medical record systems with TCM characteristics. This will enhance the collection and utilization of TCM data. As a result, this digital transformation is expected to significantly improve the overall service capabilities of TCM.
Cultivating Digital TCM Professionals
Moreover, to support the cultivation of TCM talents, the guidelines propose the creation of digital learning resources. These resources will use digital technology to replicate the diagnostic and treatment processes of renowned TCM doctors. Additionally, by recording teaching practices digitally, they will provide a robust foundation for the next generation of TCM practitioners.
Innovation and Development in Digital TCM
Furthermore, the guidelines also highlight the importance of scientific and technological innovation, industrial development, and cultural communication within the TCM sector. Consequently, the integration of digital technologies is expected to lead to comprehensive advancements in the industry.
As China continues to drive digital TCM integration, it focuses on data security, standardization, and developing skilled professionals to transform the TCM industry. Ultimately, the goal is not only to modernize traditional practices but also to create a more connected and efficient healthcare system that preserves the essence of Chinese medicine while embracing the benefits of digital technology.
