Canadian’s Journey into Traditional Chinese Medicine in China
Martin Haase, a Canadian enthusiast of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has spent the past 17 years immersing himself in Chinese culture and TCM practices. Residing in Changsha, Hunan province, Haase lives with his Chinese wife and their two daughters, both of whom attend public school in the city. His daughters, whose first language is Chinese, have seamlessly integrated into their local environment, with English as their second language.
A Lifelong Fascination with Chinese Culture
Haase’s fascination with Chinese culture began in high school, where he developed a deep interest in Chinese martial arts and Taoist philosophy. His passion for natural healing was also influenced by his grandmother’s herbal knowledge, which eventually led him to explore Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Pursuing Traditional Chinese Medicine Education
In 2004, Haase took a significant step by enrolling in a TCM college in Victoria, British Columbia. After completing a three-year acupuncture course, the college dean encouraged him to further his studies in China. Following this advice, Haase arrived at Hunan University of Chinese Medicine in Changsha in 2007.
Reflecting on his decision, Haase described it as the best choice he ever made. “I thought it was an amazing opportunity because before that, it had always seemed like an impossible thing to do,” he said. Despite the challenging weather, he now considers Changsha his second home, where he feels completely comfortable.
Gaining Trust as a Foreign TCM Practitioner
Currently, Haase is pursuing a master’s degree in acupuncture, moxibustion, and tuina massage at Hunan University of Chinese Medicine. He appreciates the rich resources available at the university and its affiliated hospitals, expressing deep gratitude for the guidance he receives from his teachers.
In his practice, Haase initially faced skepticism from Chinese patients who found it unusual to receive acupuncture from a foreigner. However, once they experienced his thoughtful and thorough approach to diagnosis and treatment, they quickly came to trust and respect him. Many of his new patients are referred by others who have benefited from his care.
“I think it’s really amazing as a foreigner to be able to give acupuncture to Chinese people in China,” Haase shared. “It’s a little ironic, especially if it’s their first time receiving acupuncture. I feel extremely appreciative and touched that I’m able to earn their trust and respect.”
A Dedication to Traditional Chinese Medicine
Haase’s journey from a curious student in Canada to a respected TCM practitioner in China highlights his dedication to Traditional Chinese Medicine and the cultural bridges he has built along the way. His story is a testament to the power of cross-cultural exchange and the growing global interest in TCM practices.
