Apple’s decision to produce its newly launched iPhone 16 series in India signals a strategic shift as the tech giant seeks to diversify its supply chains amidst growing geopolitical tensions. Traditionally, Apple relied heavily on China for the production of its high-end smartphone models, while India handled lower-end and older versions of the iPhone.
However, new reports suggest Apple is now mass-producing its latest iPhone line-up, including the iPhone 16 Pro series, in India alongside China. This expansion marks a significant change in the company’s supply chain strategy.
Analysts believe that this move is part of Apple’s broader effort to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing, especially given the strained relations between Beijing and Washington. As Apple seeks to mitigate security and economic risks, it is also expressing growing confidence in India’s high-tech manufacturing capabilities.
Karthik Nachiappan, a research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Institute of South Asian Studies, highlighted that Apple is not alone in this trend. “Major tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon are shifting production away from China due to increasing geopolitical uncertainties and risks,” he said.
Apple’s shift to India reflects the company’s commitment to building a more resilient and diversified global supply chain, while also strengthening its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for smartphones.
