Shenzhen’s Container Throughput Surges by 16.33%, Driven by NEV Exports and Cross-Border E-Commerce

Shenzhen’s container throughput reached an impressive 20.25 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from January to August this year, marking a significant 16.33% year-on-year growth, according to Shenzhen Customs. The city’s exports of new energy vehicles (NEVs) have also experienced notable growth, with the value of NEV exports hitting 15.15 billion yuan (US$2.14 billion) in the first seven months of the year, up 50.8% from the previous year.

Cross-border e-commerce has played a key role in reinforcing Shenzhen’s status as a major container hub, with export volumes of e-commerce goods surpassing traditional trade in the first half of the year. This includes significant increases in the shipment of bulky items such as furniture and outdoor equipment.

In July, Yantian Port, one of the world’s largest container ports, set a new single-month record by processing over 1.47 million TEUs, showcasing its continued importance in global trade.
