Guangdong Braces for Frosty Blast: Cold Wave Brings Sharp Temperature Drop and Travel Disruptions

A biting cold wave is set to descend upon Guangdong province, bringing with it a significant temperature drop, icy conditions, and strong winds. The China Meteorological Administration issued an orange cold wave warning on December 15th, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Frosty Forecast:

  • Temperatures across most of Guangdong will plummet by 10℃-14℃ starting December 16th, with the coldest mornings expected on the 21st and 22nd.
  • Northern Guangdong, especially high-altitude mountainous areas, could experience frost or even ice with temperatures dipping as low as 0℃ (-4℃ to 0℃ in some areas).
  • Sleet or freezing rain is also a possibility in high-altitude regions.

Travel Disruptions:

  • To ensure safety, 29 passenger routes in Guangdong will be suspended from December 16th, including:
    • All island routes between Nansha (Guangzhou), Xiangzhou (Zhuhai), Shekou (Shenzhen), and Macau.
    • Island routes to and from Hengqin.
    • High-speed passenger ships and car ferries on the Taishan Chuan Island route in Jiangmen.
  • Travelers are advised to closely monitor weather updates and route information before making any travel plans.

Safety Precautions:

  • Keep warm: Dress in layers and take measures to prevent respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, especially during the sharp temperature drop.
  • Beware of icy conditions: The cold weather may lead to icy roads and slippery surfaces in northern Guangdong and mountainous areas. Exercise caution while traveling and driving.
  • Strong winds: Be prepared for strong gusts of wind, particularly near buildings, towers, and trees. Stay updated on weather warnings and take necessary precautions.
  • Protect agriculture and livestock: Implement measures to shield outdoor vegetables, fruits, livestock, and aquaculture from the cold. Ensure the safety of facilities and cages in marine ranches and poultry sheds.

Stay Informed:

  • Closely monitor weather forecasts and official warnings issued by the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau.
  • Adjust travel plans and activities based on the latest weather updates.
  • Prioritize safety and take all necessary precautions to stay warm and protected during the cold wave.

By taking these steps and staying informed, residents and visitors in Guangdong can safely navigate the upcoming cold weather and minimize any potential disruptions. Remember, preparedness is key!
