The “Roof of the World” takes a major step towards clean energy independence with the launch of its first 100-megawatt wind power project. Nestled at a breathtaking 4,650 meters above sea level, the wind farm in Nagqu, Tibet, began humming into full operation on January 1st, 2024.
Giant Turbines, Powerful Punch:
Equipping the windswept plains with 25 colossal turbines, each boasting a 4.0-megawatt capacity, the project sets a record for the single-unit capacity in China’s ultra-high altitude regions. These giants of the wind will channel clean energy, enough to fulfill the annual needs of a bustling 230,000 residents, directly to the Nagqu region.
From Vision to Reality in Record Time:
Conceived in April 2023, the wind farm materialized in just nine months. This swift construction, at such an extraordinary altitude, is a testament to the dedication and skill of the engineers and workers who braved the harsh conditions. The impressive 640 million yuan (approximately 90.36 million US dollars) investment highlights the significant commitment to harnessing Tibet’s wind potential.
Powering Progress, One Clean Breeze at a Time:
This landmark project doesn’t just light up homes; it fuels Tibet’s future. The 200 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy generated annually will not only diversify the region’s energy mix but also play a crucial role in ensuring stable winter heating and electrical supply.
A Beacon of Green Change:
The wind farm stands as a beacon of hope for a cleaner, more sustainable future in Tibet. It paves the way for further renewable energy development, fostering environmental resilience and economic growth in the region.
