A cargo ship collided with the Lixinsha Bridge in Guangzhou, southern China, on Thursday morning, causing a partial collapse and sending vehicles plummeting into the Pearl River below. Authorities are currently managing traffic and investigating the incident, but details about potential casualties remain unclear.
Images from state media show the bridge fractured, with the ship wedged beneath it. The bridge, a vital link between Guangzhou and other key cities in the Greater Bay Area, underwent strengthening work in 2022 to improve its resilience against collisions.
Nansha, the southernmost district of Guangzhou, is a designated hub for technological development within the Greater Bay Area, a government initiative aiming to create an economic powerhouse by integrating 11 cities in southern China. The cargo ship involved in the incident was en route to Nansha from Foshan’s Nanhai district.
