Guangzhou, China – A devastating bridge collapse in Guangzhou’s Nansha district has claimed the lives of five individuals and left two injured. The incident, which occurred on February 22nd at 5:31 AM, also temporarily isolated the nearby Sanmin Island, impacting its residents.
The Lixinsha Bridge collapsed after the container ship “Lianghui 688” made improper maneuvers, causing its hull to collide with the bridge piers. This impact led to the collapse of the bridge deck over the navigation channel.
Authorities launched a swift response, deploying over 130 rescue personnel and 15 boats. Five individuals, including three passengers from a minivan that plunged into the water, have tragically lost their lives. Two others remain hospitalized but in stable condition. A crew member from the ship also sustained minor injuries.
The bridge served as the only land connection to Sanmin Island, home to over 9,000 residents. To address the island’s isolation, authorities deployed ferries, increased bus service, and expedited construction of temporary docks. Additionally, water trucks and emergency supplies have been delivered to ensure basic needs are met while repairs are underway.
Power supply on the island remains stable, but communication services were temporarily disrupted. Emergency repairs have largely restored communication networks.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, focusing on the ship’s actions and potential bridge maintenance issues. The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety and the need for stricter regulations and maintenance procedures.
